Grand Ole Opry: The Home of American Music

The show that made country music famous features a dynamic line-up of new stars, superstars, and legends of country music in each performance. Unlike a typical concert, the Grand Ole Opry presents eight or more artists on each show, giving the audience a sample of each artist’s musical style.

The Country’s Most Famous Stage

What began as a simple radio broadcast in 1925 is today a live entertainment phenomenon. Dedicated to honoring country music’s rich history and dynamic present, the Grand Ole Opry showcases a mix of country legends and the contemporary chart-toppers who have followed in their footsteps. Additionally, the Opry is world-famous for creating one-of-a-kind entertainment experiences for audiences of all ages.

It’s been called the “home of American music” and “country’s most famous stage.”  Moreover, hundreds of thousands of people make pilgrimages across town or around the world to the Grand Ole Opry to see the show live.

How it all began

Over 90 years after the first Grand Ole Opry show was broadcast live on the radio, people in every corner of the globe recognize the Grand Ole Opry as the show that made country music famous. How it earned that reputation is quite a tale. It began on the night of Nov. 28, 1925. An announcer on Nashville radio station WSM introduced fiddle player Uncle Jimmy Thompson. He became the first performer on a new show called “The WSM Barn Dance.”

Now, over 90 years later, the show Hay started is still going strong. Along the way, it has launched countless country music careers and led the way for Nashville to become Music City.

The Opry’s story started in locales such as Nashville’s Dixie Tabernacle and historic Ryman Auditorium. Also, it features some of America’s most iconic entertainer. Everyone from Patsy Cline and Hank Williams to Carrie Underwood and Garth Brooks.

To share the Opry’s history is to share the story of country music. To explore the Opry’s history is to open a window on a unique portion of America’s cultural landscape.
