Long ago, the name Chris LeDoux was known as a genuine professional rodeo cowboy. Before he performed on stage as a musician, he competed on the national rodeo circuit. Chris is a certified bareback riding champion having the World Champion Rodeo Cowboy title in 1976. Besides that, he became famous for his hit “Hooked on an 8 Second Ride” for a different audience. The track was released in 1988 by Chris LeDoux and the Saddle Boogie Band.
Chris LeDoux Cowboy Journey
Having blessed with the talent, music background, rodeo cowboy lifestyle, and passion, LeDoux settled on writing songs in 1970. In two years’ time, he penned enough songs to create an album. Soon, father and son LeDoux were able to establish a recording company named American Cowboy Songs. In the beginning, he recorded his songs at his friend’s basement. Then, he sold the records at the back of his truck.
When Ledoux gave up being a rodeo cowboy, he continued to write and record songs and began playing in concerts. Eventually, he gained popularity and started to reach the majority of the country music community. In July of 1992, he released his first ever gold album Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy. “Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy”, “Cadillac Ranch”, and “Hooked on an 8 Second Ride” are some of the songs on the album.
From its title, “Hooked on an 8 Second Ride” provides a glimpse into his former rodeo cowboy days. His 1992 release of this re-recorded song set his acceptance and uprising status in the country music industry. The song also symbolized a slightly newer sound—a concert style—apt for the changing tides of country music performances. It could also even be said that it had a culturally relevant anti-drug message during that time.
Interestingly enough, the re-recorded song celebrates the April 1992 founding of the Professional Bull Riders. This legitimized a tradition he had grown up with and contributed to immensely. His son even says, “LeDoux’s music captured the spirit of the sport”.
