“Amarillo by Morning” is a rodeo ballad song written by American songwriter Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser. The song was popularized in the 1970s by Stafford. His version was released in 1973 as a single from his album, Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose. Due to the song’s popularity, several covers were published. One of those versions that became popular was George Strait’s.
George Strait‘s version of “Amarillo by Morning” was released in January 14 1983 and was featured on his album, Strait from the Heart. Upon its release, it immediately entered the country charts and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Music critics such as Kevon Coyne gave Strait’s rendition a high grade and said that he has finally found his niche as a performer.
