A country song originally recorded by American country music legend Waylon Jennings, “Her Man” was penned by country music songwriter Kent Robbins. Jennings recorded and released his version on his album The Eagle for Epic Records in 1990.

Her Man” narrates about the man’s decision to change his lifestyle the woman he loves dearly. He then wishes that with all these efforts, soon, he will be “her man.”

As a few of the line goes:

I’m gonna change my ways of doing things around here
I’m turning over a new leaf gonna get myself in gear
‘Cause I’ve got a woman who’s better than most
And I’ve made a mess of her plans

So startin’ today all I’m gonna be is her man
I’ve been a wild catter and a go go getter
Been an SOB right down to the letter
I’ve had misadventures I even got pictures

Later, the song was covered by fellow country music singer Gary Allan in 1996. It was one of his hits from his debut album, Used Heart for Sale. Released on August 12, 1996, “Her Man” was Allan’s first ever single at the same time the album’s leadoff. American record producers Mark Wright and Byron Hill produced the song for Decca Records. This almost three-minute song is the B-side of his other single “Wake Up Screaming.”

Though not his original, his efforts of introducing himself with the song did not disappoint fans. In fact, his version initially charted at no. 67 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks right after its release in August 1996.

Soon, Allan’s “Her Man” peaked at no. 7 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs while no. 9 on the RPM Country Tracks in Canada. It remained on the charts from 1996 until early 1997.

With this song, Gary Allan received remarkable reviews from fans and music critics alike. Billboard magazine correspondent Deborah Evans Price favorably reviewed it saying:

“[Allan’s] solid country voice turns in a thoughtful, believable performance on this song about a man who has let his woman down and is now determined that ‘starting today, all I’m gonna be is her man.'”
