If I were to ask you to enumerate the songs of the great Kris Kristofferson, what would be the first song that would come into your mind? “Why Me, Lord” would probably be on the top list of most of you. Well (of course together with his “Help Me Make It Through The Night”), “Why Me, Lord” is definitely a classic of Kristofferson. A gospel country song, it is rich in pure reflection and exudes a message with a good intent. Who could ever not be touched by this amazing song?
“Why Me, Lord” was a massive hit for Kristofferson along with other notable songs For the Good Times, Me and Bobby McGee, Sunday Morning Coming Down, and Help Me Make It Through the Night. The song helped him boost his career in the 1970’s. To note, Kristofferson came up with the song after having attended a religious service. He was humbled by what he has witnessed that it was like more of a heart-changing song for him.
Gaither Vocal Band Delivers An Emotional “Why Me, Lord”
There are many artists who have already recorded and performed this classic hit. The most notable performances include that of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty, Ray Charles, and the Gaither Vocal Band. Each rendition is distinct and every artist undoubtedly gave justice to the song.
In 2006, American southern gospel vocal group Gaither Vocal Band gave their own version of Kristofferson’s hit. Very touching and emotional, the song starts in a slow, mellow beat piercing the heart. The harmony of the voices at the chorus provided a soothing and relaxing feeling. The band’s vocal prowess was very much highlighted in the performance. But more than the voice, it is the heart that was touched and moved by every line the band sang. They ended the song soulfully as if it were a prayer that needed an AMEN at the end!
Here’s a piece of the powerful song…
Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving you
Or the kindness you’ve shown.
Lord help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul’s in your hand.
