Friends are important figures in one’s life. They say that friends are an extension of ourselves. They are there to provide the companionship we need outside of our family circle. Hence, each has at least one friend during our lifetime. Sometimes, our family members also serve as our friends. For some, they consider their pets (i.e. dogs, cats, etc.) to be their friends. But as no one and nothing is permanent in this world, these friends or friendships we have now may be disappearing from our lives at some point in time. However, there’s one real friend we could ever have who will stay and never leave us. That’s Jesus, our Lord, and Savior. He’s the perfect epitome of the saying,
“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”
The Classic and Comforting Hymn
“What a Friend We have in Jesus” is a song that extols the value of Christ’s friendship with us. Indisputably, that’s priceless. So, even if all of our earthly friends have gone out of our lives as long as we have Jesus, there’s nothing to worry about. After all, Jesus Christ is more than enough.
“What a Friend We have in Jesus” is originally a poem that Joseph Scriven wrote in 1855. His composition was meant to comfort his mother who was living in Ireland at that he was Canada. Based on Scriven’s life story, we could say he’s a selfless person. To note, Scriven has gone through missing his wedding day twice. He lost two fiancés due to some adverse events shortly before their wedding day. However, these misfortunes he encountered did not leave him miserable and hopeless. As a matter of fact, he made use of his tragedies to show concern and care for the handicapped and elderly in their place. And toward the last few years of his life, he was able to write a beautiful poem. Today, that poem turned into a hymn and offering peace and solace to each of us who listens to it.
