Joey + Rory first performed on Country Music Television’s Can You Duet in 2008. The husband-and-wife duo placed third in the TV singing competition. After which, the couple released their debut album, The Life of a Song, in October of that year. They filled their following years with concerts and albums. Of course, there was sorrow, too. Despite accomplishments and awards, Joey died and Rory was flooded with grief. Their music inspired many. In addition, their timeless lyrics, striking vocals, and love for one another made them the most-loved country duo among others. We have dissected their songs and picked our Top 5 favorites. – the best of Joey + Rory.
“Cheater, Cheater”
“Cheater, Cheater” is Joey + Rory’s debut single. It is a pure country song with a whole lot of fun. The song does not talk about the Feek’s real-life marriage, but they managed to get into character, so easily.
“That’s Important to Me”
In September 2010, Joey + Rory released their second album, Album Number Two. “That’s Important to Me” followed as the album’s second single. The song did not exceptionally do well on the charts. However, it received a nomination for Mainstream Inspirational Country Song at the 2011 Inspirational Country Music Awards.
“This Song’s for You”
Joey + Rory got help from Zac Brown for their song “This Song’s for You,” released as the lead single from their sophomore album in July of 2010. Rory Feek and Brown wrote the song when the two acts were on tour together. Zac Brown Band frontman also sing the song’s bridge. What really makes the song special is the fact that is a love letter of sorts to Joey + Rory’s fans.
“If I Needed You”
“If I Needed You” must have been special for the Feeks since it is their first-ever Grammy-nominated song. It is from their 2013 Made to Last record. The music video shows the couple getting ready for their daughter, Indiana, to be born. Happily, the song received a surprise nomination for Best Country Duo/ Group Performance at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
“When I’m Gone”
Of course, we saved the best for last. Joey + Rory’s “When I’m Gone” has moved the hearts of millions. It was on the duo’s third record, His + Hers. The song is the story of a wife telling her husband that he will be all right when she is gone. Eventually, it became true for the couple as they struggled with Joey’s terminal cancer. Strangely, “When I’m Gone” was around long before Joey Feek’s cancer. Truly, Rory still goes on living their music.
