Are you satisfied with the recent ACM performance or not? If not, here’s the First Wives Club singing Lesley Gore’s ‘You Don’t Own Me’ to brighten your day. ‘You Don’t Own Me’ is hardly a country song but everyone would attest to its popularity that some women of Country have used it to make a women’s anthem of their own.

Lesley Gore, You Don’t Own Me

“Our original intent was to write a song with a woman telling a man off: ‘Don’t tell me what to do, don’t tell me what to say.’ Though we didn’t realize it at the time that it would become a woman’s anthem, it definitely was our intention to have a woman make a statement.”

Those were the exact words of John Madara and David White who penned the hit song for Lesley Gore. In 1996, First Wives Club cast Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler gave a compelling and realistic version of this song which breathes fresh air on how women should feel in that particular year.

“You don’t own me” Lyrics

You don’t own me
I’m not just one of your many toys
You don’t own me
Don’t say I can’t go with other boys

And don’t tell me what to do
Don’t tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don’t put me on display ’cause

You don’t own me
Don’t try to change me in any way
You don’t own me
Don’t tie me down ’cause I’d never stay

I don’t tell you what to say
I don’t tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you

I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please

And don’t tell me what to do
Oh, don’t tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don’t put me on display

I don’t tell you what to say
Oh, don’t tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you

I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live
