How often do you pray? Do you pray when you just need God or in a way that you pray because you are in trouble? Either way, the song “Daniel Prayed” will make you think again about why it is important to have a strong faith and to pray to God.

Loveless’ 2001 Hit

Performed by Patty Loveless, written by Ralph Stanley and produced by Shelby Singleton Music in 2001, Daniel Prayed is a song that was inspired by an account in the bible from the book of Daniel.

Daniel Prayed starts with the lines

I read about a man one day
He wasted not his time away
He prayed to God
Every morning, noon, and night
He cared not for the things avail
But trusted one who never fails
Oh, Daniel prayed

It narrates about a man, Daniel, who was faithful and loyal to God amidst adversaries. Praying in the morning, noon, and night shows how strong he puts so much trust in his living God.

Daniel 6:10

“Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.”

Taken from an account of Daniel in the Old Testament, the song talks about how faithful and trustworthy Daniel is to God. He wasted no time but prayed to God in the morning, noon, and night.

During that time in Jerusalem, Dariusthe Mede‘ was the king and a close friend of Daniel. Having been raised to high office by his royal master, Daniel was the center of jealousy among his rivals. Thus, they tricked King Darius into issuing a decree which condemns Daniel to death.

Hoping for Daniel’s deliverance, but unable to save him, the king has him cast into the pit of lions. At daybreak he hurries back, asking if God had saved his friend.

Daniel replies that God had sent an angel to close the jaws of the lions,

“because I was found blameless before him.”

The king has those who had conspired against Daniel, and their wives and children, thrown to the lions in his place, and commands to all the people of the whole world to “tremble and fear before the God of Daniel”.

Reflection

Most of the time, we encounter problems that may arise from anywhere. And we may experience cycles of ups and downs in life. We laugh, and we cry. We cheer up, and we get down. Feelings that seem to be like a roller coaster. But what do we usually do when we encounter such situations?

Whenever we need something, we pray. Whenever we’re in trouble, we pray. Whenever a loved one is in danger, we pray. Whenever we’re broke, we pray. And many whenevers…

But…

Whenever we’re happy, we don’t care. Whenever we feel like everything’s in the proper place, we don’t care. Whenever we feel love from each other, we don’t care. And many whenevers…

The song Daniel Prayed teaches us that it is not only when we’re poor and needy that we need help from up above, but it is in everything that we do that we should be thankful and prayerful to God… just like Daniel.
