Ray Palmer penned the words to this hymn in a personal notebook that he used for poetry, prayers, and prose. He wrote it in response to a tough year and never planned to show it to anyone. Years later, he ran into his friend, composer Lowell Mason, who had been writing a book of hymns. He wanted to know if Palmer had anything to contribute. Palmer then showed him these words. Mason loved them and instantly went to work putting them to music. Inspiring holy assurance, “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” is a song of wisdom and influence. It is perfect to use when the focus of a service is on prayerful admission. It is a prayer, confessing that Jesus Christ is the only source of mercy, love, ease, and redemption.
When Our Faith Is Tested
At times, our spiritual strength is low and we struggle to measure up and rest on that glorious height we really needed to be. Consider “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” medicinal. “The hymn is a prayer of individual commitment to Jesus. Like many hymn texts, it begins by voicing a general aspiration to follow Jesus, and then improves the theme in the context of suffering and trials. Finally, it echoes the desire to be with Jesus in death and eternal life. This hymn helps us recall to whom our faith depends on. In Him, we will never be saddened.
We pray you come across this hymn and find it the precise energizer to all your faithful mornings. You are your mornings refreshing, motivating and much awakening to the meaning and be back on your spiritual tracks devotedly journeying on. No more word mincing, here goes its bible counterpart:
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
(Hebrews 12:2)
As we sing the crowning verses of this hymn, let us look to Jesus, the author of our faith and a source of hope when our strength is gone.
We pray that God talks to you through the words of this hymn and that you may come to know Him more, day by day.
