Reminisce The Everly Brothers Through “Crying In The Rain” 3

The Everly Brothers are one of the most successful duos in the country music industry. Their career started in 1950’s, but their legacy continues to these days. The group was composed of Isaac Donald “Don” Everly and Phillip “Phil” Everly. We surely miss them, their performances, and their songs. With this, let’s reminisce their works of art through “Crying In The Rain.”

Crying In The Rain…

Howard Greenfield and Carole King wrote the song which topped the country charts in 1962. This is the only collaboration between the said song-writers. Despite the commercial success of their partnership, King and Greenfield never wrote another song together.

Covers And Renditions…

“Crying In The Rain” was covered by various artists. In 1972, Penny DeHaven duet with Del Reeves released a country version of the song. On the other hand, “The First Lady” of country music Tammy Wynette covered the song in 1981 which hit the country charts. Also, Art Garfunkel, of Simon and Garfunkel, with James Taylor, covered the song in his album “Up ’til Now” in 1993.

The Everly Brothers…

Don and Phil, both guitarists, used vocal harmony mostly based on diatonic thirds. On most recordings, Don sang the baritone part and Phil the tenor harmony.

In the late 1950s, The Everly Brothers were the rock and roll youth movement’s addition to close harmony vocal groups. Additionally, they influenced rock groups of the 1960s. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon & Garfunkel developed their early styles by performing Everly songs. Moreover, The Bee Gees, The Hollies, and other rock and roll groups that feature harmony singing were also influenced.

Solo Careers…

Don and Phil parted ways to pursue solo careers from 1973 to 1983. Don found some success on the U.S. country charts in the middle to the late 1970s, in Nashville with his band, “Dead Cowboys,” and playing with Albert Lee. He also performed solo in London, in the middle of 1976, at an annual country music festival. His appearance was well received, and he was given “thunderous applause,” even though critics noted that the performance was uneven.

Meanwhile, Phil sung backup for Roy Wood’s 1975 album Mustard and two songs for Warren Zevon’s 1976 self-titled album.

The brothers’ reunited at the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 23, 1983, a musical re-junction of forces between them which ended both of their ten-year-long solo periods.

On January 3, 2014, Phil Everly died at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, due to lung disease.

Isaac Donald “Don” Everly and Phillip “Phil” Everly were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
