A strong woman who just got out of a bad breakup and trying to pick up the pieces is what Sara Evan‘s “A Little Bit Stronger” tries to depict. This was very apparent from the entrance of the song’s music video. A teary-eyed Evans confesses the pain she’s going through as a result of her former flame leaving her. However, in the opening verse alone, the protagonist has already displayed how she’s getting “a little bit stronger.”

Woke up late today and I still feel the sting of the pain
But I brushed my teeth anyway
I got dressed through the mess and put a smile on my face
I got a little bit stronger

“A Little Bit Stronger” came out in September 2010. It was released as the first single from the 2011 album of Evans, Stronger. In May 2011, eight months after its release, the song topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart becoming Evans’ fifth No. 1 song. The song reached a much greater success in the following month as it gained platinum certification from the RIAA. That was the singer’s first platinum single. “A Little Bit Stronger” was also included on the soundtrack for Country Strong, a 2010 movie. During the 2011 Academy of Country Music Awards, Evans performed the song much to the amusement of the audience. The Born to Fly” singer did not only receive a resounding round of applause but a standing ovation too. Likewise, Evans sang the tune during the finale of the Dancing with the Stars’ twelfth season on May 24, 2011.

From a Heartbreaking Story to a Potent Song

Behind the gloomy lyrics of the song was a real heartbreaking experience by one of its songwriters. In an interview, Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum shared the painful story that inspired the writing of the song. Scott stated that the song is one of those most personal tunes she’s written as it speaks about her own breakup experience. According to her, when she began writing the song, she was still recuperating. Hence, the traumatic experience is still fresh.

“It was personal when I wrote it, but now that it’s actually out there, it takes it to another level. I’m sure [my ex] has heard it, but that’s okay because the song’s about “every day without you, I’m a little bit stronger,” which is true. So, he can hear that. That’s okay.”

The moment Scott learned that her song got recorded and it’s by no less than Sara Evans who’s also a big name in country music, she couldn’t be any happier. In fact, she considered the experience one of the “coolest victories” she ever felt. The success that her song has reached somehow alleviated the painful past from which it was crafted. Scott co-wrote the song with Luke Laird and Hillary Lindsey.
