In the classic hymn, “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” praying in private was emphasized. It specifically gives reference to what the book of Matthew (6:6) says about the proper way of praying. Now, here’s another great spiritual song about praying. The song focuses on a Congregational prayer this time. This form of praying is usually practiced in the church and it plays an important role in a worship service. It constitutes a very sacred time in which the corporate voice of God’s people is lifted heavenward (Calvin Institute of Christian Worship).
The song “Let Us Pray” offers an invitation to a congregation in prayer. It’s a beautiful gospel tune that encourages everyone to draw closer to God and talk to Him. Doing so not only deepens our faith in Him but also strengthens our relationship with one another. The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, was among the famous singers to give life to the song. Apart from including it on his 1999 collection, Peace in the Valley: The Complete Gospel Recordings, Presley also performed the song in the 1969 American musical drama film, Change of Habit.
Below is a clip from the film where Presley performs the song “Let Us Pray” in a jovial spirit. Such was indeed a motivating invitation for all to spend an intimate time together with God.
The Song
“Let Us Pray” was penned by Ben Weisman and Buddy Kaye. Presley first released the song on his 1970 album, You’ll Never Walk Alone, following the production of the musical film where he performed the tune. Since the late singer had embarked on recording gospel music in 1969, he became extremely committed to it. Besides recording numerous gospel songs and releasing them as singles, he also performed them in several of his movies. “Let Us Pray” is just one of the many songs featured on his films.
As seen in the clip above, the performance of the song was quite upbeat as Presley led the congregation in a cheery vibe. Even the way he strums his guitar, it’s very much apparent how he’s trying to warm the crowd’s spirit and prepare them for a solemn worship. Added to that is the heartwarming opening stanza of the song. You may refer below for the tune’s complete lyrics.
The Lyrics
Come praise the Lord for He is good
Mmm come join in love and brotherhood
We’ll hear the word and bring our gifts of bread and wine
And we’ll be blessed beneath the signSo let us pray together, pray together
Pray with the one mighty voice (heavenly voice)
And let us sing together, sing together
Pray and we’ll rejoice (we’ll rejoice)When strangers reach out for your hand (for your hand)
Respond to them and understand (heaven obeyed to understand)
We’ll rise as one to calm the storm outside the gate (calm the storm)
With faith in Him we’ll never leave (never leave)So let us pray together, pray together
Pray with the one mighty voice (heavenly voice)
And let us sing together, sing together
Pray and we’ll rejoice (we’ll rejoice)The love of God is on our side (love is, love is on our side)
We have the strength to move the tide (we’ll move the tide)
The world will say so, there’ll be peace and love for all (love for all)
And we must give our brothers loveSo let us pray together, pray together
Pray with the one mighty voice (heavenly voice)
And let us sing together, sing together
Pray and we’ll rejoice (we’ll rejoice)Love for all, love for all to the Lord
We’ll rejoice love for all to the Lord (2x)
We’ll rejoice for the Lord
