Humble Beginnings

One of the prominent country artists who rose in the 1990s, Douglas Jackson Brooks more professionally known as Doug Stone, was born on June 19, 1956. He spent his childhood in the city of Marietta, Georgia. Stone grew up in a family of country singers and musicians. At the age of five, his mother taught him how to play the guitar. Two years later, he opened the show for Loretta Lynn with the efforts of his mother.

Unfortunately, his parents later divorced, and soon after, he moved to live with his father. As a teenager, he started his music career. He sang at local skating rinks, at local bars, and then he became a member of a short-lived trio.

In 1982, Stone met Carie Cohen, his second wife. He continued playing at various local venues until he was discovered by a record label manager. Soon, the manager asked him for demos. In order to avoid confusion, he opted to record and use his stage name Doug Stone.

By the start of the 1990s, Doug Stone’s career experienced the limelight. He first released his single called “I’d Be Better Off (In a Pine Box)” for Epic Records in 1990. It was also the first single released from his self-title album. The following year, he released a successor of his debut album. The album was titled I Thought It Was You. Both first two albums earned a Platinum certification from RIAA. On the other hand, Stone’s 1992 & 1994 albums, From the Heart and More Love, respectively, earned a Gold certification.

Moreover, he later moved to work with Columbia Records. Under the label, he recorded an album titled Faith in Me, Faith in You. However, it did not produce chart-topping singles. By the late 1990s, he exited the label and did not release album due to heart attack and stroke.

Throughout his career, Stone charted at least 26 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs. His greatest chart success was achieved in 1990 through 1995. His most notable no. 1 singles during this time are “In a Different Light“, “A Jukebox with a Country Song“, “Too Busy Being in Love“, “Why Didn’t I Think of That“, and “Addicted to a Dollar“. Furthermore, Stone is best known for his neotraditional style of country music, and his frequent ballad singles.

Here is one of his famous no. 1 hits, “In a Different Light“:
