Dottie West Vents Anger in “A Lesson in Leavin’” 1

If someone cheated on us, we naturally get upset. Much more so if that person is someone we adore. Most, if not all, of the time, we find ourselves uttering a never-ending litany of curses toward them. It seems that this is the easiest coping mechanism we could resort to. Somehow, it helps relieve the pain.

For musically-inclined people, they often look for songs suited for their situation or for the person who cheated on them. If you are the latter, then you’re on the right page. This article brings you the perfect song you can dedicate to your unfaithful partner. It’s called “A Lesson in Leavin’.”

Brief Song Info

Although we are not sure as to the inspiration behind the writing of the song, its theme—karma—is clear that it’s meant for those who show disrespect and disloyalty to their partners. In this song, the female narrator is venting her anger over her lover who cheated on her. She hopes that the man’s next lover treats him the way she was treated, saying that he will be given “a lesson in leavin’.”

Randy Goodrum and Brent Maher penned the lyrics and American country music singer Dottie West first recorded it in 1980. West brought the song on top of Billboard Country Chart making it her first No. 1 single. Moreover, the song peaked at No. 73 on Billboard Hot 100. Also, it entered the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart as a minor hit. With that, West musical career had an upturn. During the early 1980s, West gained much popularity with this song.

Jo Dee Messina’s Version

In 1999, another country music singer Jo Dee Messina re-recorded the song. Her version titled “Lesson in Leavin’” was also a success though not exactly alike with that of West’s. Messina’s cover reached at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Chart and spent seven weeks on the second spot.
