Precious Lord, Take My Hand

“Precious Lord, Take My Hand” is a gospel staple. It is as if the embodiment of total submission to the will of the Lord. We put our utter faith and trust in whatever plans our Creator has for us.

The song “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” was actually penned during the time of grief. It was written after his wife died during childbirth, and his son following after her two days later. The song became his most famous one, and prominent artists have covered it. The roster includes Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, among others. Plus, it was a favorite gospel song of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Notably, the song was sung at the rally held at the Mason temple the night before his assassination.

Drawing From Personal Experience

There will always be times of conflict in a person’s life. It’s somehow inherent in this mortal plane to be full of temptation and sin and regret. We just can’t seem to take a break.

But, the sense of heartbreak and hopelessness only comes if we forcibly take the burden upon ourselves and not ask for help. We have to realize that the world and all its suffering was not meant to be taken by just one person.

Together, we can lift each other’s burdens. And more importantly, we should consider that the Lord is always there to guide us in everything we do and every challenge that we face.

I’ve had a friend who always reminds me that we are not given that obstacle if our benevolent creator does not know that we are capable of handling it. And that is 100% true. Most of the time, the trials that we face are stepping stones for our growth. We should always seek the Lord’s guidance, and this is what “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” reminds us of.

Listen to the amazing song here! Please note that this is not Rev Dorsey singing it himself, rather this is a choir that arranged, sung and recorded the beautiful words that the Rev penned.

The Revered Father

Thomas Andrew Dorsey became known as the Father of Black Gospel Music. He had his familial roots both in music and in the church. His father was a minister, and his mother was a piano teacher. Fr. Dorsey first picked up the piano part, with him learning the blues as a young man, before moving on to study music in Chicago. He had a stint in the music business before shifting his career towards creating songs and praises for the Lord.

Happy Birthday to the "Father of Gospel Music" Thomas Andrew Dorsey (July 1, 1899 – January 23, 1993)!

His style would often blend rhythms of jazz and blues to what had been the standard hymnal practice. As a matter of fact, he styled it in such a way that was new and invigorating in the church. This style birthed to what was closely known as “Dorseys” during his active years. The Library of Congress added Fr. Dorsey’s album Precious Lord: New Recordings of the Great Songs of Thomas A. Dorsey to the United States National Recording Registry.

Moreover, with his multiple moving songs, he is a treasure. Truly, God used him as an instrument of faith, and a subtle reminder with his song “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.”
