Country and pop star Donna Fargo wrote and recorded “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA”. A newlywed girl singing to her husband is how this track was written. From this hit, it made her have her signature song.
In The Billboard Book of Number One Country Hits, Fargo told she wrote the song with a different title originally. “It really started out to be ‘Happiest Girl in the World’, but the rhyme scheme got to be too unnatural. As a result, I changed it to ‘USA’. It kind of wrote itself after that”, she shared to Tom Roland.
Later, there was a rumor about the line “skip-a-dee-doo-dah”. They said that it was originally “zip-a-dee-doo-dah”. Because of that, the Walt Disney Company consequently took legal action towards Fargo as soon as they became aware of the song and its line. They demanded that the line be changed. Putting the rumor to rest, Donna stated that “skip-a-dee-doo-dah” was indeed the original. Furthermore, no lawsuits intervened during this time.
In the spring of 1972, “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA”, Fargo’s debut single, became a number-one country hit. Then, on the Billboard Hot 100 pop music chart, the song peaked at the 11th spot. Also, on the Billboard Easy Listening Singles chart, it reached number 7. In the year 1972, Billboard ranked it as the 55th song. On March 3, 1973, Fargo earned a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 15th Annual Grammy Awards.
Tammy Wynette covered the song on her 1972 album My Man.
In the same year, Tanya Tucker also recorded the song for her Delta Dawn album. Her producer, Billy Sherill, planned “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA” to be her first single. On the other hand, Tucker talked him into allowing her to record and release “Delta Dawn” instead.
Thirty-five years later, actress Daveigh Chase sang it in one of the episodes of Big Love, an HBO television series.
On April 15, 2012, a video of Lana Del Rey performing the song at a gig in 2009 leaked online.
