Two of the world’s greatest artists collaborated and recorded “If I Needed You”. One of the best country love songs of all time. I’m referring to the voices of Don Williams and Emmy Lou Harris. Moreover, their voices matched perfectly and the song just came out so satisfying and soothing.

We all know that Williams’ voice is raspy yet smooth bass-baritone while Harris’ is warm and angelic. With this, the combination of their distinct vocal sounds would make any song flawless. No wonder, their song was embraced by the country enthusiasts. And up to these days, the song is still being cherished by the listeners.

Li’l Bit ‘Bout The Song…

“If I Needed You” wasn’t Harris’ nor Williams’ original song. It was Townes Van Zandt and was the most romantic song he had written. In addition, the song was part of Zandt’s album “The Late Great Townes Van Zandt” in 1972.

9 years later, Williams and Harris made their collaboration. It’s William’ only collaboration that made it to the top in 1981.

Furthermore, Zandt’s introduced the song “If I Needed You” in one his concerts back then. He was surprised by Doc Watson’s version of the song. It blew his mind.

On the other hand, the song was written about Townes’ business partner and producer’s wife Anne Mittendorf Eggers.

The Song’s Reception…

It was foreseen that the song will be on top and clinch by the country music enthusiasts. This is because of the tones and talents of Williams and Harris. Also, at that time, both were at the peaks of their career.

Due to its wide distinction, the song placed at No.3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Additionally, the RPM Country Track Chart Canada documented the song as No.1.

Other Covers…

Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You" was not only covered by Emmylou Harris and Don Williams. The most notable version of the song. But there were other versions as well such as Andrew Bird on “Hands of Glory”, Guy Clark on “Songs And Stories”, Lyle Lovett on “Step Inside This House”, and others.

The song was also covered in the Belgian film “The Broken Circle Breakdown”, including actors Johan Heldenbergh and Veerle Baetens sing it live. It also appears on the original soundtrack of the film.

In 2012, Mumford And Sons released a version of the song. Also, Kasey Chambers covered the song on her 2011 album Storybook.

The Soulful Lyrics…

If I needed you, would you come to me
Would you come to me, for to ease my pain
If you needed me, I would come to you
I would swim the seas, for to ease your pain

Well the night's forlorn, and the morning's born
And the morning shines, with the lights of love
You'll miss sunrise, If you close your eyes
And that would break, My heart in two

If I needed you, would you come to me
Would you come to me, for to ease my pain
If you needed me, I would come to you
I would swim the seas, for to ease your pain

Baby's with me now, since I showed her how
To lay, her lilly
Hand in mine, who would ill agree
She's a sight to see, a treasure for
The poor to find
