Dolly Parton Gives Her Spin of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”

If there could only be one rock song that Dolly Parton loves, it would definitely be the 1971 folk-rock hit, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. The country songstress has been obsessed with the song for quite some time that she has covered the tune. As a matter of fact, she did not only render it but also added some of her words to make it her own.

Dolly Parton Adds Her Lyrics to the Song

Some artists, composers, and songwriters do not easily give the approval of changing or adding something to their songs. Hence, there is a thorough process of doing this. In fact, it would take a big deal of money in order to attain this process. However, as for Parton’s sake, she easily got the producers and artist’s approval to her favor.

Clearly, she is one of a kind and never fails to please. She then went on to record “Stairway to Heaven” as a part of her album in 2002. With the complete approval of the song’s composers, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and singer, Led Zeppelin, Dolly made the classic rock anthem her own.

This infamous cover appeared on her bluegrass collection called Halos and Horns. In total, there were 14 songs on the CD. Among these, she self-penned the twelve. The other two were “If” by the ‘70s band, Bread, and “Stairway to Heaven.” But, why did she choose these songs? Well, as she has stated, the two songs have a special place in her heart.

“My group is called the Blueniques, which kind of like bluegrass, unique bluegrass. So I flavored “Stairway to Heaven” up a bit with the bluegrass flavors like we did Collective Soul’s “Shine” last year and won a Grammy for it.”

Further, she added:

“Toward the end [of the song] I added a choir. I always thought of this particular song as more of a gospel song, like somebody trying to buy their way into heaven. And I threw in a few little-ad-libbed lines to make it more like it was. We used our bluegrass instruments and the choir to make that big part where Jimmy page usually played. So we kind of made it bigger in all our ways.”
