Dolly Parton Bares Her Soul—Admits to Have Attempted Suicide

Everybody’s got either an extremely light or a dark side to their lives. Even the most adored singers and well-known actors are no exemption. For Dolly, facing the dark side of fame while dealing with her own personal issues was no cakewalk. It took all of her resolve and (well, the help of her trusty Boston Terrier) Popeye to take a breather and go over her life-threatening decisions.

It was during the 1980’s when Dolly was going through a very low point in her life. At that time, she was nursing a broken heart over an unnamed lover with whom she had an affair with while she was still married to Carl Dean. She was also trying so hard to overcome the horrible memory of when she worked with Burt Reynolds for the film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. To make things worse, Dolly was also a hot spot for death threats after she canceled a tour due to health concerns.

From binge eating to gaining over 50 pounds, the grief-stricken Dolly was already at her limit. Then, one afternoon, (as Dolly recalls) she was sitting upstairs in her bedroom when the gun sitting at her nightstand drawer caught her attention. She kept a gun as a protective measure in case burglars would break into her home. Before she realized it, Dolly picked the gun up, held it and stared at it momentarily. Just then, Popeye, her dog, rushed upstairs. “The tap-tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality and I suddenly froze. I put the gun down. Then I prayed. I kinda believe Popeye was a spiritual messenger from God.” The highly acclaimed singer described.

If it weren’t for her dog, Dolly would no longer be with us and she would not realize just how valuable her life is. “I don’t think I’d have done it, killed myself, but I can’t say for sure. Now that I’ve gone through that terrible moment, I can certainly understand the possibilities even for someone solid like me if the pain gets bad enough.”

The details of her suicide attempt were disclosed in her latest book, ‘Dolly on Dolly, Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton.‘ In addition, the legendary singer reveals more about the intimate aspects of her life, along with a heart-to-heart exclusive about the real story behind her countenance.
