Carter Adds Humor in "Did I Shave My Legs for This?" 1

Humor is what some artists are a bit aloof incorporating into their songs. Although a little risky to take, Deana Carter simply channels the inner kid in her with the song, “Did I Shave My Legs for This?”

Co-written and recorded by American country music artist Deana Carter, “Did I Shave My Legs for This?” was released in November 1997. It was the fifth single and title track from the album Did I Shave My Legs for This? In addition, the song reached #25 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The song was written by Carter and Rhonda Hart.

The Humor in the Song

The song humorously describes a marriage that is obviously opposite of one in a traditional manner. Particularly, the wife (the narrator) fantasizes of a luxurious lifestyle when got married. She explains that after finishing a supposed hectic workday, she undergoes a feminine makeover (supposedly at a local spa).

However, she returns to a deteriorating mobile home, where she and her husband reside. With high expectations that her husband will provide her a romantically intimate evening, she finds herself preparing supper for her husband.

Meanwhile, her husband just watches television and consumes beer and clearly not caring to display any sympathy towards his wife.

Here are the lyrics of the song and check it out for yourself the humor within.

Flowers and wine
Is what I thought I would find
When I came home from working tonight
Well, now here I stand
Over this fryin’ pan
And you want a cold one again

I bought these new heels
Did my nails, had my hair done just right
I thought this new dress was a sure bet
For romance tonight
Well it’s perfectly clear
Between the TV and beer
I won’t get so much as a kiss
As I head for the door
I turn around to be sure
Did I shave my legs for this?

Now when we first met
You promised we’d get
A house on a hill with a pool
Well, this trailer stays wet
And we’re swimming in debt
Now you want me to go back to school

I bought these new heels
Did my nails, had my hair done just right
I thought this new dress was a sure bet
For romance tonight
Well it’s perfectly clear
Between the TV and beer
I won’t get so much as a kiss
As I head for the door
I turn around to be sure
Did I shave my legs for this?
Darling, did I shave my legs for this?
