It was Tina Turner’s most recognizable signature songs in 1970. But before her rendition, there were Creedence Water Revival and a soothing cover of the one and only Conway Twitty.
John Fogerty wrote “Proud Mary” and first recorded with his band Creedence Clearwater Revival. Fantasy Records released the song as a single from the band’s second studio album “Bayou Country”. Additionally, it was released by the same record company in January 1969.
Furthermore, the single was considered to have been released in early January 1969. The song became a major hit in the United States.
Due to its popularity, various artists recorded the song, and for country music enthusiasts, Conway Twitty has his version.
In 1969, Twitty released his album “I Love You More Today” which included his notable songs such as “Crazy Arms,” “One For The Money,” etc. and of course “Proud Mary.”
Moreover, Twitty’s version has a twist that sounded so good especially for us country music lovers. He made the song a little lighter compared to the other versions. With his soothing and mellow voice patched with a Honky Tonk style, it sure did “Proud Mary” made its way to country music.
Creedence Clearwater Revival…
John Fogerty, the lead, wrote the song, especially for the band. They indeed the origin of the song in 1969. It was also said that the song was released in Christmas of 1968. Fogerty wrote the song after his discharged from National Guard.
The song started off with a slow, sultry, soulful tone in which Tina introduced the song. Then warned the audience that she and the band were gonna start it off “nice and easy” as “we do nothing nice and easy.” Finally, they would finish it “nice and rough.”
After the lyrics are first sung softly by Turner, the song is then switched into a funk rock vamp with gospel-influenced vocals.
