Country artists such as Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, And Kacey Musgraves, all turned out to the two-hour event titled Outlaw: Celebrating the Music of Waylon Jennings, with various performances. The roster also featured one of today’s huge stars but was just on the border of fame at the time. And that, fellas, was Chris Stapleton.

When the concert was filmed, Stapleton was not that big of a star and was somewhat unknown to most country fans. It was just a matter of months later when he got a shot to fame following his jaw-dropping performance at the 2015 Country Music Association Awards.

Chris Stapleton’s Stellar Cover of “I Ain’t Living Long Like This”

Chris Stapleton picked to cover “I Ain’t Living Long Like This” to honor Jennings.  The song was Jennings’ major hit as his 11th number one on the charts. It was first recorded by Emmylou Harris in 1978. Jennings released his version the following year, stimulating many other artists to record their own covers. It’s fitting that Chris Stapleton and Morgane Stapleton opened this homage to Waylon Jennings. Let’s also applaud Stapleton’s band for their work during the performance. They kept the fun going throughout the song, especially during the multiple instrumental breaks.

Looking back at Stapleton’s performance, it’s no wonder why he is now one of the most prominent acts in country music. His cover is one of the best. He drove the song with much interest, touching the crowd’s emotions. It was truly one stellar performance from our man!

We’re glad to have found this video.  I won’t ask who did it better. Waylon would have been proud of Chris Stapleton for doing such a wonderful job. What are you waiting for? Get addicted to Stapleton’s cover of Jennings’ iconic hit. Go ahead and tune in below.
