16-Year-Old Girl Takes on The Judds Hit on The Voice Stage

Nowadays, it is very rare for us to witness a contestant singing country music in a reality show. Moreover, if we do, the song that the contestant sings is more of the contemporary country tune. However, believe it or not, this 16-year-old from New Mexico wowed the audience when she performed The Judds’ “Grandpa” on The Voice, Monday night (Nov. 12).

True talent exuded from Chevel Shepherd as she sweetly rendered this 1985 hit of the mother-daughter duo. While many artists seem to flop during the live shows, she remained calm and unshaken, perfectly delivering the song.

Penned and released nearly two decades before Shepherd was born, “Grandpa (Tell Me ’bout the Good Old Days)” was the Judds’ classic hit in the ‘80s. Also, it has become one of their signature songs and has since become popular in recent years. The song’s nostalgic lyrics go back to the past and are very relatable than ever. The tune was just a perfect fit for Shepherd’s voice.

The Young Country Singer from New Mexico

Chevel Shepherd has since been eyed by fans since her blind audition in October. This young country singer hails from Farmington, New Mexico. During her audition, she managed to earn a 3-chair turn with her rendition of The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young.” Among the judges that turned for her, she surprisingly picked Kelly Clarkson as a coach over country music singer Blake Shelton. As a matter of fact, Shepherd choosing Clarkson was a “dream come true” for the latter since she had been waiting for the right country singer to join her team.

Following Shepherd’s Blind audition, Clarkson cannot contain her emotions and delightfully said:

“It’s no secret I have been dying to get a female country singer. And, you float that line perfectly kind of in the pop world as well. With those breaks in your voice…. Yes, they’re very Dolly Parton but they’re also very Sarah McLachlan. One main reason, why I do want to work with you too after turning around and watching, is I was just like you when I was young and you are in your head a lot.”

So far, Shepherd’s decision has paid off as she continued to soar week after week. She won her Battle round singing George Strait’s “You Look So Good in Love.” Also, she notched a spot on the live shows with her performance of the Dixie Chicks’ “Travelin’ Soldier.”

Now, she is among the 24 contestants singing for the Voice season 15 crown. However, only 12 will make the cut. Do you think Chevel Shepherd will advance to the next round?

Check out her performance of “Granda” and let us know in the comments if she deserves a spot.
