When Rosanne Cash made a decision to follow a career path on solo recording in the early 1980s, she bumped into the talented musician Rodney Crowell’s path and they both tread on the same road. Throughout her career, Crowell served as the producer of most of Cash’s records. The two did not only become professional partners but also ended up marrying each other. Their third collaborative project was the top country album Seven Year Ache. Released in 1981, the album spawned three No. 1 hits including the title track Seven Year Ache,” “My Baby Thinks He’s a Train,” and “Blue Moon with Heartache.” You can read the article featuring the first song which was also Cash’s debut entry atop the country chart linked on the title. We’ll reserve the second chart-topper for another article to put your excitement on hold a bit. For now, let’s talk about the Man in Black’s” daughter’s third No. 1 single “Blue Moon with Heartache.”

Rosanne Cash’s Third Breakthrough Single

“Blue Moon with Heartache” was the second among Cash’s self-penned tunes that reached the country music chart’s summit. Becoming her third No. 1 song, “Blue Moon with Heartache” was also the third single on the third studio album. The said record was also a Top 40 hit on the Adult Contemporary chart peaking at No. 37. The song focuses on the narrator’s hope that her relationship with her lover, which is on the rocks, would still survive. The narrator defies giving up and tries to repair the shattered relationship as much as she can. She strongly believes that love would somehow win in the end. But, if all the efforts done had resulted in nothing, then she would just resort to going away.

Does that sound like suggesting something about the former couple’s imminent breakup? It’s unfortunate that their marriage ended the way this song insinuates. But, that’s just the way life went for them. We can only be happy for both of them as they are now living their respective lives the way they want it to be. And the reality that this song and others they once worked on went successfully would always remain.

Let’s listen to Cash’ third breakthrough single below.
