Jason Michael Carroll’s first hit was a single released in 2006 album Waitin’ in the Country, “Alyssa Lies“. After which, he wrote another song, fortunately becoming his second biggest hit. Another song on the album is the track, “Livin’ Our Love Song” which became his highest-charting song on the Hot 100. The video opens with a radio playing Carroll’s first hit, “Alyssa Lies”.
How The Song Was Written
Between radio station shows in California, Carroll found time to write “Livin’ Our Love Song” on the tour bus. Together with his guitarists, Glen Mitchell and Tim Galloway, they got in a discussion about songwriting. Jason expounded that they need to make sure they tell a story that connects with them and that can connect to somebody else. That was when he stopped playing the Xbox, and they decided to write a song based on Jason’s story about reconnecting with Wendy, his wife now. A representative from their label was on the road with them. She loved the song, had them play the song at the radio station, and later on had Jason return to the studio and record the song for his first album.
The Context
The story of “Livin’ Our Love Song” starts in high school, where Carroll started dating 15-year-old Wendy Phillips. He was 18 at the time, so they kept this relationship low-key. Jason joined the Marines when he left school, but continued seeing Wendy. They were a behind-the-curtains couple for two and a half years before they came clean to her parents. Knowing this, her parents sent Wendy away to Bob Jones University in South Carolina, preventing her to see Jason. Wendy got married while Jason met a girl back in North Carolina and had two kids with her before getting married and having a third child.
Years later, Jason and Wendy were separated from their spouses. Jason’s sister remained in touch with Wendy and took her to one of Jason’s shows in Greensboro, where they renewed their relationship. When Caroll saw her, he walked up to her, and said,
“I think about you all the time. I’m sorry things went the way they did. You never have to speak to me again. I just want to get this off my chest.”
They hugged. After the show, they started seeing each other again and clicked like they did not miss a day. Now, Jason and Wendy are married and have a child together.
