A couple of days ago, we have featured an all-female a cappella group from Brigham Young University based in the city of Provo in the state of Utah. The BYU Noteworthy‘s performances, especially their a cappella versions of the classic gospel hymns namely, “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” and “How Great Thou Art“, have won the hearts of many. Without a doubt, their God-given talents have made an impact not only on the country but to the rest of the world.
Another equally talented a cappella group comes from the same university. It is an all-male group named the Brigham Young University (BYU) Vocal Point. Consisting of nine all-male members at BYU, it was founded by two BYU students, Dave Boyce and Bob Ahlander, in 1991. Moreover, BYU Vocal Point is a student organization under the direction and custody of BYU’s Performing Arts Management (PAM).
Just like its sister group (Noteworthy), Vocal Point has also joined national and international a cappella group competitions. In fact, they were hailed the champions at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) in 2006. Furthermore, Faith Centered Music Association awarded the group three Pearl Awards for “Sacred Recorded Song of the Year“, “Group Recording Artist of the Year” and “Performing Artist of the Year“. Meanwhile, in 2011, Vocal Point took home the fifth place on NBC’s The Sing Off in its third season.
Earlier this year, the group has released their a cappella version of a modern Christian hymn, “In Christ Alone“. The performance was genuinely magnificent and simply exquisite, worthy of time to be heard.

“In Christ Alone”: A Modern Christian Hymn
We have come to the point where we don’t already just rely on singing classic gospel hymns and Christian music standards. Modern Christian songs have already dominated in churches and what better way to praise the Lord than to fervently sing these songs just like the classic hymns.
One of the contemporary Christian songs, “In Christ Alone” was crafted by Northern Irish composer Keith Getty and English hymn writer Stuart Townend in 2001. Both songwriters are best known for pioneering modern hymns and contemporary worship music. Considering its roots, the song has a strong Irish melody. In addition, it is the first song both Getty and Townend wrote together collaboratively. The music was credited to Getty while the original lyrics to Townend.
Becoming a Christian music standard in the early 2000s, “In Christ Alone” is acclaimed and considered a credo or credal song because of its belief in Jesus Christ.
A credo is a brief authoritative statement of religious belief . It can also be referred to as a guiding principle. An example of this is the Apostles’ Creed. (Merriam-Webster, 1828)
Moreover, the song centers on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Also, it reiterates that He is a God who even death cannot hold.
Here’s the first two stanzas of this contemporary Christian hymn:
In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.
