The just-concluded Country Music Association Awards show held on Wednesday, Nov. 14, might probably be one of a roller coaster of emotions. From the comedic adlibs of the hosts, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, to the revelation of the gender of Carrie’s baby, we really enjoyed what the CMAs offered this year.
However, emotions had got to be triggered when Garth Brooks rendered his new self-written song, which is all about and for his wife, Trisha Yearwood. In fact, it was only during that time he first sang the song live. Prior to his performance at the CMA Awards, Brooks shared that he just wanted to perform this year if he could dedicate a ballad he had written for his wife. However, the CMA did not feel that such a song be a right fit for the show.
In response, Brooks said:
“I won’t play it for anybody else because it’s a song, you’re not going to believe it’s written by guys, it’s a song about the strength of a woman. And for me, that’s Trisha. So, what I offered to the CMAs was, ‘Let me sing this to her that night. She hasn’t heard it and she won’t hear it until that moment, nobody will. They’ve been very sweet. They kinda came back and said, ‘Hey look, something new that’s a ballad probably doesn’t work for us.’ So, cool. I’ll find some other way for her to hear it. So, right now, we’re just coming to attend.”
Never been released or heard, his song, “Stronger Than Me” finally got its debut on that night. Thanks to the massive support from Brooks’ fans, they powerfully expressed their longing to see him perform. With this request, the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year eventually got his moment on stage.
Garth Brooks Serenades Trisha Yearwood
Even if it was as planned as it was, we were still surprised by the outcome. As Brooks takes on the stage with his guitar, a spotlight shone on Yearwood who sat in the audience in front of him. It was a special night for both of the lovebirds as it went heartfelt and emotional.
Approaching the end of the song, Brooks held his breath until the last verse. He then sang:
I’d give her anything in life that’s mine to give her
‘Til the last breath that I breathe.
If I have a choice, I pray God takes me first.
‘Cause you’re stronger… than me.
As the song closed, both he and Yearwood broke to tears. Indeed, “Stronger Than Me” is just the perfect song Brooks has ever dedicated to Yearwood. More than the song, the message, and meaning contained in it was way beyond dedication and love.
