The three-day Stagecoach Festival, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, includes some of the country music’s major acts. It also comprised of several surprise guests throughout the weekend, including the now-famous yodeling Walmart Boy, Mason Ramsey. He guest-starred during Florida Georgia Line’s headlining set on Friday night, April 27.

On its final night, Garth Brooks promoted the 2018 Stagecoach Festival on Sunday, April 29. He played to a record-setting crowd. Moreover, wanting to share the love and happiness, he called Lee Brice on stage to sing “More Than a Memory” with him. Why would he do that?

Brooks and Brice, A Touching Friendship Behind Performances

When Garth Brooks ended Stagecoach 2018 with a headlining set, fans were expecting his wife, Trisha Yearwood, as a special guest. To their surprise, Brooks invited his fellow country artist, Lee Brice, on stage. They sang “More Than a Memory”, a song that Brice wrote and Brooks recorded. Brooks released it as a single in 2007, becoming the first song to debut at Top 1 in the history of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Starting off, Brooks uttered a white lie looking at Brice,

“I’m nervous as hell standing here, so why don’t you start?”

This allowed his friend, Brice, to take the limelight. Brooks even let Brice take the lead on the first stanza, standing off at the side of the stage, amused. When the second verse rolled in, Brooks walked up to the plate to put the final touches on an epic performance by two of the country music’s top singers. The crowd was not so bad either. They sang along with the two, feeling the love shared at the moment.

Garth praised his duet partner for being one of the coolest dudes on the planet. He also added,

“Lee was singing his butt off. It was awesome.”

“More Than a Memory”, the Creation

A heartache in Brice’s own life that never went away inspired him to write “More Than a Memory”. He found himself waking up one night thinking about the love of his life, an old flame. Once, he wakes up, thinking about her at 3:30 in the morning and started writing her a letter. Brice co-wrote “More Than a Memory” with Kyle Jacobs and Billy Montana.

Their collaboration at Stagecoach was not the first time Brooks and Brice have performed the song together. They also performed it during Brooks’ World Tour in 2014, at Boston, Massachusetts.
