Chris Stapleton 2 of 3: 2018 Grammy Award for Best Country Song

Chris Stapleton 2 of 3: 2018 Grammy Award for Best Country Song 1

Preview

The Staples Center is the home of the Grammys since 2004. But, this year, the 2018 Annual Grammy Awards ceremony had all artists together in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Artists of all genres gather to honor the best songs, artists, albums, and performances that happened in the past year. For the first time in many years, no country artists had the chance to be nominated in any of the major all-genre categories at the 2018 Grammys. Startlingly, country artists were shut out of those categories. However, country artists still had their time to walk away with a number of awards. One category is the Best Country Song. The songs “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “Go Rest High on that Mountain” bagged the title in the 1996 and 2005 Grammy awards respectively.

2018 BEST COUNTRY SONG: Broken Halos

It’s imperative to note that songwriters rather than the artists receive the award for Best Country Song.  The artist can receive the award if they also played a part in writing the song. The excellent country song nominees are as follows:

  1. Better Man– songwriter Little Big Town, performed with Taylor Swift
  2. Body Like A Back Road – songwriters Zach Crowell, Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally & Josh Osborne, performed by Sam Hunt
  3. Broken Halos– songwriters Mike Henderson & Chris Stapleton, performed by Chris Stapleton
  4. Drinkin’ Problem – songwriters Jess Carson, Cameron Duddy, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne & Mark Wystrach, performed by Midland
  5. Tin Man – songwriters Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert & Jon Randall performed by Miranda Lambert

And yes, the winner is “Broken Halos” written by Chris Stapleton himself and Mike Henderson. “Broken Halos” is the second single in Stapleton’s album From a Room: Volume 1. It only reached the 13th spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. Knowing it won, there must have been a deep impact on all who listened to it. Musically, critics defined it as a multi-genre song. People who have passed away before their time inspired the song. Stapleton recorded Broken Halos a day after a longtime friend did.

It is a mid-tempo country rock number in which Stapleton reflects on the wounds people suffer and the road toward healing that they travel. Another writer called it a country gospel after watching Stapleton’s live performance. He took it as a reminder to keep the faith amidst tragedy. Angels, as Stapleton sings, show to help us on our way.  When their job is done, they leave us without any reason.

Stapleton and Henderson really deserved this win!
