Blake Shelton’s Ex-Wife, Kaynette Williams – who is she? Who doesn’t know Blake Shelton? He is one of the biggest stars in country music, which can be credited for multiple hit songs all through the years. Blake is also one of the most famous coaches on a popular reality singing competition show, The Voice. This only proves that Blake has the kind of crossover appeal that most country stars can only dream of.
Still, Blake’s personal life has made it to the headlines nearly as frequent as his music. And even though he is already in a stable and happy relationship today, did you know that he also has his share of tough times and heartbreaks?
Meet Kaynette Williams, Blake’s fellow Oklahoma native, high school sweethearts, and apparently ex-wife. In today’s article, let’s take a peek into the inspiring life of Kaynette Williams.
Kaynette Williams (aka Kaynette Gern) and Her Relationship with Blake Shelton
Kaynette Williams was born Kaynette Francis Gern on February 20, 1973, in Oklahoma City. Her father is said to be a news presenter on a local news station while her mother was working in a private school.
She attended the same High School with Blake Shelton in Ada, Oklahoma, where they became high school sweethearts. They met when they were just 15 years old, and even before they started dating, Blake already had the ability to make Williams very happy. “He was 15 when I met him, and I was just out of high school,” Kaynette told Country Weekly. “Even before I was dating him, I always thought he was just the funniest person. You can’t help but have a good time and laugh around him.”
Just like Kaynette, Blake was also born and raised in Oklahoma. He learned how to play the guitar when he was just a teenager. And with his determination to pursue a career in country music, Blake moved to Nashville, Tennessee.
He landed a job at a publishing company. However, he was fired for constantly trying to talk to songwriters instead of doing his job! Lucky for him, his wait did not take too long. In 2001, he landed a solo recording contract with Giant Records and released his first song ‘Austin.’
‘Austin’ featured a bittersweet tale of a man who’s spent the past year leaving outgoing messages on his answering machine for the woman he hopes will call and say she’s coming home in a rock and country ballad genres. This then became a huge hit. It did not only peak at number 18 on the ‘US Billboard Hot 100’, but it also enjoyed five weeks of being the number one on the ‘Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks’ chart. The same year, his self-titled debut album, which was released by ‘Warner Bros,’ hit the charts.
And indeed, behind every successful man is a strong woman. By his side, all through the challenges in the early days of his career was his girlfriend Kaynette. They worked together to help advance Blake’s career. Kaynette also moved to Nashville with Blake to support his growing music career. She even acted as his road manager when he was on tour.
Just in case you don’t know, this was the years when the country singer was still sporting a curly mullet. “Nobody else in the world seems to think it was as awesome as I still think it was,” Shelton shared in his interview with PEOPLE magazine. The singer used to sport a mullet, and he firmly refused to cut it, despite people telling him he looked terrible. “Basically, it has gotten to the point where it is just a matter of pride. And I know it looks like crap, but it is just more fun to me to irritate people than cut my hair to satisfy them,” he said as he recalled his days with long locks. Well, I guest Kaynette must have been smitten with it, what do you think?
After a couple of years of dating, Blake has bizarrely popped the question. In CMT’s 20 Questions With Blake Shelton, Blake shared: “I asked her to marry me and she said yes and it was early one morning back in December, and we ended up spending the day with some friends and kind of having a party all day and had a good time. … I got in from hunting that morning, and asked her to marry me, and we went back out hunting,” he said in a 2003 CMT interview.
He also shared in the said interview what his answering machine answers: “[My fiancée] Kaynette is actually on my voice mail, and it is her announcing my name, much as Ed McMahon did with Johnny Carson years ago. And that is all it is. It does not say, “Leave a message.” It says, “Blaaaaaaake Sheeeeeeeeeelton!” That’s it.”
Two tied the knot during a small ceremony in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on November 17, 2003. The couple chose to keep it simple. Blake was seen wearing his Wranglers, boots, and cowboy hat, while Kaynette wore a Demetrios wedding gown. And what’s even more fascinating is that the wedding only has Blake, Kaynette, the man who officiated their wedding and a photographer.
Blake told Country Weekly that this decision was important for him and his then-wife because “it was totally something that we wanted to do — just she and I. Our whole lives are always in the public eye, plus we live on a bus with 10 other people. There’s just always people around. We never have time for us, so it seemed like the perfect way to do this. It was a moment we would always share, knowing it was just the two of us.”
“I knew Kaynette was the one,” Shelton shared in his interview with Country Weekly a month after their wedding. “Just because I can’t explain it I can’t say it’s because we get along or because of the way she looks. It’s just something I feel – you know what I mean? It’s nothing more than just knowing you’re right.”
During their intimate wedding ceremony, Blake sang Conway Twitty’s “Julia” to his new wife. Unfortunately, three years after the couple said their “I dos,” the two decided to call it quits in a law court.
In Blake’s interview with People magazine last 2007, he said that his marriage ended because, “I just really don’t think I was ready to be a husband,” however rumors have been circulating saying that he and Miranda Lambert, one of the hottest female country music singers of our time and of whom Blake went on to date after he ended his marriage to Kaynette and married in 2011, started a relationship even before the divorce. In fact, Kaynette claimed that the country singer was “guilty of inappropriate marital conduct.”
Avid fans of Blake and Lambert know that the two met during a CMT 100 Greatest Duets concert, where they shared the stage for a duet of David Frizzell and Shelly West’s “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma” in 2005. Many noticed that they couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other during their performance. “Every time I hear [that song], it’s like I instantly go back there,” Blake told PEOPLE in December of the duet.
Blake has also openly admitted that he fell in love with Lambert right at that very moment, on the stage – the only problem was that he was married to Kaynette. “I was a married guy, you know?” Shelton shared with VH1 during Lambert’s 2011 Behind the Music episode. “Standing up there and singing with somebody and going, ‘Man, this shouldn’t be happening.'”
“I’ve never had that kind of experience with anybody. I was a married guy, you know? Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage,” he later told VH1.
Miranda has also said there was “inevitable chemistry” between them on stage. But even though the connection that the two country crooners felt, Miranda claims that she did her best from keeping her distance from Shelton.
“I knew he was married,” Lambert had admitted to Dateline years later. “I had seen their wedding pictures in Country Weekly. I knew better, like, ‘this is off-limits.’ My parents are private investigators, for God’s sake. I’ve seen this my whole life—affairs, and of all people to know better, I know better than this.”
Both were firm when it comes to denying that their relationship had started while Blake was still married. In 2006, Blake’s three-year marriage with Kaynette Williams was dissolved, and in 2007, Blake and Miranda announced that they were officially dating. In April 2007, Shelton and Lambert appeared together on the 2007 CMT Music Awards’ red carpet.
But when they were asked for confirmation of their relationship status, Shelton objected, “It depends on what day you ask. Miranda and I have a very interesting relationship. She can get so mad at me that she just wants to punch me in the face, and we’ll say that’s it. Then, 30 minutes later, we’re calling each other and acting like it never happened.”
Blake continued, “But I think she’s somebody that I’m going to have in my life a long time. She’s one of those few people you meet and has a connection with, and you don’t really fully understand it, but you know it’s a pretty big deal.”
Blake and Miranda continued dating for the next few years, and in May 2010, Blake proposed to Miranda after he has secured the blessing of the country singer’s father. The ceremony followed a year later in May 2011. It was held at Don Strange Ranch in the bride’s home state of Texas.
And for Kaynette? She left Nashville to return to Oklahoma. To her dismay, Blake moved into a home with Miranda Lambert that was a little too close for comfort. “After Blake and I split up, I moved from Tennessee back to Oklahoma,” Kaynette shared in an occasional 2011 interview with The Enquirer. “But then Blake and Miranda moved back there to a neighboring town, and it just felt like Oklahoma wasn’t big enough for all of us.”
Despite the rumors, divorcing Kaynette was not a decision that Blake took lightly. In 2014, Shelton explained during an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, “That was easily the toughest thing that I’ve, you know, been through. I put my divorce up there with my brother’s death, and that was a tough, tough call to make.”
Kaynette Williams Today
Kaynette Williams is now living a quiet life in Great Bend, Kansas, living a life out of the spotlight. She is currently working as a math facilitator at an elementary school. In 2013, she was linked to rodeo champion Cody Joe Scheck.
Cody is not just your regular rodeo guy out there; he is actually well educated and is reported to have attended a Community College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He also holds the world record for steer roping.
And if you will take a look at Kaynette’s social media, she seems to be married to Cody. In her Facebook account, she has written ‘Kaynette Sheck’ rather than ‘Kaynette Williams.’ In her recent post, she posted a photo of Cody and captioned it with “Happy Birthday to my best friend & amazing husband, Cody Sheck! I love you more than words!!!”
In 2014, Kaynette made a buzz when she put her wedding dress on eBay, up for sale. A Kansas-based seller, of whom we can assume is Kaynette as the seller is from the same town Kaynette lives in, was trying to sell a size 6 Demetrios wedding gown for $700 on the auction site. The item was described as the “actual wedding gown worn by Blake Shelton’s first wife, Kaynette Williams, in their wedding.”
The listing comes with several photos of the strapless, short gown, including several photos of Blake and Kaynette at the altar on their wedding day. However, no bids were made on the item. Well, when your marriage ends, what do you do with your dress after all? Do you think this is tacky enough? I say, go get your money Kaynette!
