The Power of No: “I’m Not Strong Enough to Say No”

When was the last time you said “no” to a person or a situation? What were your reasons for doing so? Was it difficult to say so?

I bet there are a lot of different reactions and reasons. Stereotyped as it is, saying “no” is mostly confused with negativity. It’s likely that we are unaware of the surge of strength we draw from “no”. Either can involve a turning away, a shake of the head, or a firm refusal. But they are distinctly different psychological states.

However, sometimes, it is better to say no than to worsen the situation. This song, “I’m Not Strong Enough to Say No” is just an example that saying “no” to someone is the better idea to do than commit something damaging.

About the song

Penned by Robert John “Mutt” Lange, “I’m Not Strong Enough to Say No” is a song recorded by American country music band BlackHawk. It was released in July 1995 as the lead-off single from their album Strong Enough. Peaking at number 2 on the United States Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks, it was their first number-one hit in Canada.

I’m Not Strong Enough to Say No” debuted at number 72 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart for the week of July 29, 1995. In addition, it peaked at number 2 on the week of October 21, 1995. It reached number 1 on the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada on the week of November 6, 1995.

Deborah Evans Price, of Billboard magazine, reviewed the song favorably, saying that Paul’s vocal “gives this group a distinctive sound, and this is yet another fine offering from this talented trio.

Behind the song

The “sign”, as revealed in the lyrics, is a wedding ring. The narrator is lamenting how difficult it is for an adulterous relationship to become authentic. “Forbidden fruit” is a great characterization of her wiles, because in the Bible Adam was influenced by Eve to eat the “forbidden fruit”.

The song’s narrator finds himself falling for another man’s wife. As they spend time together, he likes being around her to being on “slippery ice”, and fears that he may not be able to stop and say no if they continue on their present path.

Here are the lyrics that say it all…

The sign says “do not touch” – you’re out of bounds
You’re forbidden fruit, don’t come around
It says don’t make plans ’cause on your hand
Is a promise made to another man

’cause when you’re around my defenses go down
Feelings get stronger, looks get longer
The closer you come, the weaker I get
If it ain’t happened now, just ain’t happened yet

So please, please, please go
I’m not strong enough to say no
Please, please don’t stay
I’m not man enough to walk away
Please, please pass by
I can’t resist you even though I try
So please go, I’m not strong to say no

The sign says “slow down-slippery ice”
You got dangerous curves, don’t think twice
It says, “not for sale, ” your spoken for
Just take your heart and walk out the door

’cause when you’re around my defenses go down
Feelings get stronger, looks get longer
The closer you come, the weaker I get
If it ain’t happened now, just ain’t happened yet

Don’t say I didn’t warn you, don’t say you didn’t know
Don’t wait ’til it’s too late and then try to go
The closer you come, the weaker I get
If it ain’t happened now, just ain’t happened yet
I’m beggin’ you
