The “King Of Honky-Tonk” Gary Stewart is celebrating his 74th birthday. With this, let’s all greet him HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Gary Stewart was known for his distinctive vibrato voice and southern rock influenced outlaw country sound. Also, he is recalled for a series of country chart hits from the mid to late 1970s; his biggest hit was “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles).” Moreover, the song topped the country charts in 1975.

Let’s all recollect his memories and works of art through his signature song “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles).” Also, let’s have a little bit of backtracking with the “King Of Honky-Tonk” though his story.

Gary Stewart…

He was named after the late actor Gary Cooper, Gary Stewart was born in Letcher County, Kentucky, the town of Jenkins. In 1959 his father, a coal miner, sustained an injury while working in the mines, and shortly afterward the family moved to Fort Pierce, a city on Florida’s Atlantic coast.

Stewart began touring with local bands and writing songs in his teens. Moreover, Stewart got married when he was 17 years old. In the daytime, he worked in an airplane factory while played rock and country bands at night.

While playing in an Okeechobee, Florida, honky-tonk known as the Wagon Wheel, Stewart met country singer Mel Tillis. He advised Stewart to travel to Nashville to pitch his songs. He recorded a few songs for the small Cory label in 1964 and began co-writing songs with local policeman Bill Eldridge.

Career and Death…

In the 1970s, Stewart’s albums were positively received by critics and core fans. Unfortunately, he never established a tremendous relationship with the wide-ranging music audience. He was categorized as “too country” for rock listeners and “too rock” for country fans.

She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles)…

Wayne Carson was the songwriter behind “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles).” Additionally, the song was released in March 1975 as part of Stewart’s album “Out Of Hand.” The song was Stewart’s third top ten hit on the country chart and his only song to hit No.1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
