B.J. Thomas has previously scored his number one singles on other music charts. Specifically, most of these hits have dominated the Adult Contemporary chart. For instance, Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” was his first chart-topper single both on the Adult Contemporary and Billboard Hot 100 charts. This was followed by the songs I Just Can’t Help Believing and “Rock and Roll Lullaby.”

However, in 1976, he took the country music industry by storm when one of his songs topped this music genre’s chart for the first time. It was his single called “(Hey Won’t You Play) Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” that made his entry to country music scene possible. Not only that, the song with the amazing long title became popular too in Canada. It topped the Canadian RPM Adult Contemporary Tracks, ranked second on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks, and peaked at No. 3 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart. To top it all, the song won the Grammy Awards’ Best Country Song title in 1976.

The Chart-Topper Hit with the Longest Title

The title of this successful single of Thomas contains exactly ten words including the parenthetical phrase. It became the song with the longest title to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the time of its release. Currently, this label is held by a Stars on 45’s medley record. Its songwriters Larry Butler and Chips Moman received the award for Best Country Song given by the Grammy Awards in 1976. Meanwhile, the song received a nomination for Single of the Year award from Country Music Association. Thomas did not win the title though.

While the singer did not have any major country hits in the next eight years, this song has launched his future success as a mainstream country music artist. Years later, several cover versions of the song from different artists came out. The song also received gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for reaching one million units of sales.
