Behind Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence” is a Screaming Plea!

Songs are lyrical poems; poems that comprise of meticulously chosen words; and these words eventually touch a part of our soul and mysteriously bring us to a world where limitations have no place to go.

Before you continue reading this article, take time to watch and listen to Simon and Garfunkel as they pour out their heart to make us hear and absorb the “Sound of Silence”.

Hello Darkness, are you a friend?

This song has preserved its fame over the decades because of the undying blaze of the message that it can convey to the listener personally. The heavenly rhythm and excellent note arrangements, of course, brought the entire song into perfection.

Although literally, the song tells of a certain man’s vision and the details that go with it, the lines when taken separately can bring countless interpretations.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again

From these first two lines alone, we can generate different perceptions.  Darkness mostly signifies unwanted occurrences such as death, emptiness, or chaos. A man in complete sanity will never consider these unfortunate events as a friend. However, the lyrics suggest that it isn’t the speaker’s first time to talk with “darkness”.

Hey, the song was intended for you…

The introduction of the song implies that the speaker got no one to talk to that he would rather talk with “darkness” just so he can voice out what is rumbling inside him.

Can you hear the pleading sound from these two lines now?

That voice behind the song seems to be desperately seeking for someone who may at least listen to what he is about to tell.

Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

Dreams or visions not shared are like emotions that remained unexpressed. This can eventually lead to the feeling of dissatisfaction or worst, misery. One of the priceless gifts we can offer to our fellow is a listening ear just when they need it the most. Let us then spare this time to go back to the song, digest its message, as it slowly breaks the “Sound of Silence”.

Further, let this song inspire you to take courage and give voice to that “silence” you have been hoarding inside you. Someone out there is always willing to listen…

You can also share which line of the song touched your heart and how it moved you.
