“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” – Matt. 5:14-16
Light is something that has an affirmative connotation. It carries with it a positive vibe. From the story of creation, we’ve learned that God made light prior to creating everything on earth. As soon as light existed, God was satisfied with it.
Taking the word light in a deeper context, the Gospel of John refers to Jesus as the “true light which gives light to everyone (John 1:9). Furthermore, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). This was indeed one of God’s beautiful promises to His children. And, we have truly been honored to carry the light of God within us.
However, human as we are, our vulnerability to committing sin is so prevalent. Oftentimes, we easily succumb to worldly things. Thus, our ability to be a beacon weakens. As a result, the light within us slowly fades. Which, in the first place, should not be the case. In order to be worthy of being called the light of the world, our life must first be out of the darkness. That only becomes possible if we walk each day in the light of God.
Here is a song performed by Donna Fargo that could help us rekindle the beacon within us. The lyrics convey a very strong message that would lead us to contemplate on our status as beacons of the world.
