In 1965, Willie Nelson recorded “Are You Sure” for his third album, Country Willie: His Own Songs – which he worked together with RCA Records and producer Chet Atkins. However, unlike the other tracks in the album, the song didn’t quite make a buzz.
Thanks to Kacey Musgraves, the little-known gem made a quiet comeback half a century after its original release.
The Incredible Thing Of How Two Country Stars Ended Up Recording The Song
Long before Kacey Musgraves became close friends with Willie Nelson, she was like every other country music junkie searching and exploring the deep dark web for the next big song. One night, she came across the country legend’s demo for “Are You Sure.”
“I was kind of, you know, cruising around, and I stumbled upon this Willie Nelson demo from 1963,” she said, adding that she immediately fell in love with the track. “I just was like, ‘Whoa, what is this?’ And then, you know, got really obsessed with it.”
As if the stars aligned for the two, Musgraves got to go on a tour with Nelson shortly after. Of course, she never missed the chance to tell Nelson about the song that once caught her eye. “He couldn’t believe I knew it,” Musgraves recalled.
Well, that candid conversation ended up into a jamming session, with Nelson offering her “Are You Sure,” but under one condition – he wanted to make it into a duet.
Indeed, the two Texans recorded “Are You Sure” in 2015 as a hidden track off Musgraves’ second studio album, Pageant Material. A year later, Nelson and Musgraves teamed up again for the song’s music video, where they can be seen nursing drinks alone at the bar, trading verses, and sharing a stage together.
