The beautiful Alison Krauss with the angelic bluegrass-country voice recently shared a video of her covering country legend Willie Nelson’s I Never Cared For You.
Reigning in her lighthearted yet soul-piercing singing voice and song interpretation, Krauss takes the listeners to a brand new journey with her own rendition. She performed I Never Cared For You during her appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Her performances were backed by a group of equally talented musicians comprised of Krauss’ Union Station band, Suzanne and Sidney Cox on harmony vocals, Ron Block on guitar, Barry Bales on bass and Matt Rollings on piano. The harmonious combination of Alison Krauss’ voice with the high-quality instrumentals and on-point vocals of Suzanne and Sidney produced a jazzy, emotionally-charged Willie Nelson classic.
Willie Nelson first introduced the song to the public as a single in 1964. He recorded the song while his stint with Monument Records was ongoing. Prior to its release, there had been quite a number of revisions to the overall musical composition of the song. The first version involved xylophones, French horns, and even trumpets. But after producer Fred Foster realized the band just didn’t jive well with the song’s message and melody, they stripped the instruments down to bass, guitar, drums, and saxophone. Due to its massive success, I Never Cared For You was re-recorded by Willie Nelson a couple of times and was even included in several of his succeeding album releases.
This time, Alison Krauss’ revival of the 53-year old tune from the country legend was released as part of her latest album, Windy City. The album is Krauss’ 5th studio album in a span of almost 18 years. It was released just last February of this year and received many positive reviews from critics.
Willie Nelson and Alison Krauss had worked together in 2015 during a shared summer tour. The two artists have developed such good chemistry onstage that left fans also wondering if Krauss’ cover of I Never Cared For You will also spark another collaboration between these two big-time performers.
