When life storms strike – physical illness, financial troubles, relationship issues, etc., finding Jesus seems quite challenging. Worse is, we even think of Him forgetting His promise of not leaving or forsaking us. Because of this, instead of drawing closer to the savior, we are actually going farther away from Him. But loving and merciful as Jesus is, He’ll certainly be there walking with us even if we tend to be drifting away. It is because during these darkest moments that Christ likes to work in our lives.

The Enlightening Hymn

For many of us, sinners, believing that Jesus Christ would ever love and accept our kind in His Kingdom is often not easy. Looking at the gravity of our sinful ways, we can’t help but conclude that we’re worthless. “How could the Son of God ever care for a sinner like me?” would be the main question we ask ourselves. In the midst of this confusion and state of doubt, Isaac Watts offered an enlightening hymn. “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed” will not only open our minds but likewise lead us eventually to Jesus Christ.

At the time “believing” became most difficult, this song was a great help for Fanny Crosby in finding the Savior. Let it do the same for us. The hymn will make it easy for us to believe in Christ’s boundless and unconditional love. There’s no greater proof to it than giving His life on the cross. Such great sacrifice is for the entire human race, regardless of the magnitude of our sins.

Listen to a heartfelt rendition of “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed” by worship leader Greg Allen below.

The Songwriter

Isaac Watts was born in England to a respected “Nonconformist” father. His father’s religious convictions led him to jail twice – at the time Isaac was born and during his infancy. Fortunately, the older Watts chose to lead a better life and would later prosper in his business. Because of this, Isaac had the best kind of education. By the age of 24, Isaac Watts became a preacher and delivered his first-ever sermon. Before` this, Isaac had been writing many verses and continued to write numerous scholarly papers. Several institutions of higher learning became beneficiaries of Isaac’s scholastic works. However, the hymn “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed” was considered his most memorable piece.
