One of the best and inspiring hymns is the “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder.” Also, it’s one of the many hymns that is gradually being used at churches and many religious events. It is also being passed from generation to generation. It was depicted from the story of a young girl and the “1 Thessalonians 4:16.” With this, it is indeed an inspiring message patched with a melody.

Furthermore, many country artists have recorded their covers and rendition. And one of the versions that can definitely prick your hearts and souls is of Alan Jacksons’. Have a little time, talk to God by listening to “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder.”

When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder…

James Milton Black is the songwriter behind the words and lyrics of the hymn. Also, he pooled resources to create a matching and soothing sound for the anthem. It was written in 1893, since then, it has spread all throughout the globe. Moreover, the hymn was based on “1 Thessalonians 4:16.”

The Story…

When James Milton Black was a Sunday School Teacher and the President of the Young People’s Society, he met a 14-year-old girl named Bessie. Bessie was a child of a drunkard. With this, she gets a little attention. She wears poorly clothes, and apparently, she isn’t enjoying the joy of life as other teens do.

Black invited Bessie to join Sunday school and become a member of the Young People’s Society. He thought it would help Bessie change her life. Bessie joined and attended.

One evening at a youth meeting, each member answered the roll call by repeating a scripture text, but Bessie didn’t reply. The situation led to Black’s realization that it would be sad if our names are called in heaven, and we are absent. His thought turned into prayers “Oh, God, when my name is called up yonder, may I be there to respond!”

After the meeting, on his way home, he’s looking for a song to sing but found nothing. Moreover, he still thinking of the thought that it would be great to have a song about the situation. Then, he thought, of writing a song about it.

When Black arrived home, he immediately looked for words and sat in front of the piano trying to create the melody. Fortunately, he was able to pen the song and even create a perfect tune to it.

The Lyrics…

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,

And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair

When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,

And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

When the roll, is called up yon-der,

The roll, is called up yon-der,

When the roll, is called up yon-der,

The roll is called up yonder I’ll be there

On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,

And the glory of His resurrection share

When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,

And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

When the roll, is called up yon-der,

The roll, is called up yon-der,

When the roll, is called up yon-der,

The roll is called up yonder I’ll be there

Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,

Us talk of all His wondrous love and care

Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,

And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

When the roll, is called up yon-der,

The roll, is called up yon-der,

When the roll, is called up yon-der,

The roll is called up yonder I’ll be there
