It’s been 28 years ago today when Clint Black brought home the most number of trophies from the ACM Awards. In particular, Black won the Top Male & New Male Vocalist, Album of the Year, for Killin’ Time, and Single Record of the Year, for “A Better Man”. With those accomplishments, the singer became the luckiest star that night of April 25, 1990. Witnesses to his triumphs are his co-stars in the industry and a crowd of fans who graced the event. The 25th annual celebration of ACM Awards took place at the Hollywood’s Pantages Theater.

The Album of the Year

Killin’ Time is the debut album of Black released in 1989. It catapulted Black’s career as a budding singer and songwriter as the album produced four No. 1 songs on the chart. His first four chart-topper hits include “A Better Man,” “Nobody’s Home,” Killin’ Time,” and “Walking Away.” The first single was also declared by Billboard magazine at the No. song of 1989. Currently, the album holds a triple Platinum certification from the RIAA.

The Single Record of the Year

“When one door closes, a window opens.”

That saying exactly applies to Black in relation to his award-winning song A Better Man.” The inspiration behind the hit is actually a sad story that he personally encountered. Being in a relationship with someone for seven years only to end up separated from each other isn’t a joke. Imagine the trauma and pain that one or both parties go through after such break-up. But the good thing is Black was able to turn such unfortunate experience into an opportunity using his musical talents. After sharing his dying romance story with his friend and regular co-writer Hayden Nicholas, the hit was born. Nicholas provided the tune’s melody and the hook line,

I’m leaving here a better man

For knowing you this way.

Once again, let’s lend our ears to this Single of the Year hit as we honor Black’s huge success almost three decades ago.
