On September 14, 1985, NBC aired an honest to goodness situational comedy through ‘The Golden Girls’ and their opening theme, ‘Thank You for Being a Friend’ resonates a still relevant message how having a friend is important in today’s very conflicting world.
The Golden Girls, Influence
Aside from the surface that we know that this is a sitcom about a bunch of old women in their golden years living together it definitely catered so much more to its audience.
It was narrative about four older women following the story of Blanche Devereaux played by Rue McClanahan, the widow owner of the house joined by fellow widow, Rose Nylund played by Betty White and divorcee, Dorothy Zbornak played by Beatrice Arthur. Later on the pilot, they were joined Sophia Petrillo played by Estelle Getty
‘The Golden Girls’ last aired on May 9, 1992. During its 7-season run with the TV series consistently being in the top 10, The Golden Girls bid goodbye after Bea Arthur who plays Dorothy left the TV series. As of 2016, the finale of Golden Girls is still the 17th-most watched television finale
Thank You for Being a Friend, Andrew Gold
One of the things that stand out most about this show is that it features a song written and performed by Andrew Gold, ‘Thank You for being a Friend” in 1978. The original version was re-recorded by Cynthia Fee who was also notable for working with Kenny Rogers to serve as a theme song.
Watch the opening theme below and reminisce some of your Golden Girls moments:

“Thank You For Being A Friend”
Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
your heart is true you’re a pal and a confidantI’m not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won’t you stand up and take a bowAnd if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see, the biggest gift would be from me
and the card attached would say,
Thank you for being a friendThank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friendIf it’s a car you lack
I’d surely buy you a cadillac
Whatever you need, anytime of the day or night
